A survey of recent popular literature on planet detection was undertaken to develop a broad view of public reactions to a program to search for planets around other stars. In this article, I discuss the interest in extra-solar planet searches, compared to other space ventures in the current political and economic climate. I also describe the role of the press and the need for public support to develop a nationally-funded space science program.
