The modulation of the basic eleven year solar activity cycle is reproduced in a nonlinear αω dynamo model. Solutions with periods of reduced magnetic activity (corresponding to grand minima) are found in untruncated two-dimensional PDEs where the dipole symmetry of solutions is imposed. The Lorentz force drives macrodynamic velocity perturbations, and the key ingredient for production of long-term modulation is the very small magnetic Prandtl number τ. This ensures that the viscous diffusion timescale is much longer than that for magnetic diffusion. In the limit of small τ, the ratio of the period of modulation to the basic cycle period scales as τ^-1/2^.
