Apatites from a variety of igneous alkaline silicate rocks and carbonatites from the Iron Hill carbonatite complex, Colorado, have been analyzed for major and trace elements. The F content of apatite increases with progressively differentiated host rocks; there is a linear substitution of Si for P. Total REE concentrations range from 0.75 to 1.73 weight per cent. Calculated P fugacities for calcite-apatite equilibrium in carbonatites are similar to those calculated for syenite, and are consistent with a common genetic origin of carbonatite and associated syenite.
