In order to find the relationship between the spatial distribution of star forming regions and physical parameters of spiral galaxies, we are studying the rotational symmetry of several hundred nearby spiral galaxies observed by GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) in the UV and as part of the Carnegie Hα imaging survey. We have deprojected the galaxy images and computed the degree of symmetry as a function of rotation angle. We have then compared the results derived from UV and Hα images. This technique allows us to quantify the number of spiral arms in a galaxy and to measure the angular cross correlation. We further investigate the symmetry in various radial annuli and the influence of other physical properties such as morphology and color. In this poster, we present preliminary results and discuss some implications.
