The EXIST mission will carry coded mask imaging into the megapixel image era and to unprecedented sensitivites. The mission will depend critically on the ability of the imaging system to achieve the anticipated performance in the presence of unpredictable background variations and with many sources present simultaneously in the very wide field of view. As the instrument becomes better defined, simulations of ever increasing fidelity ore being used to assess the possible effect on the performance of each conceivable imperfection and complication in a real instrument in an actual mission. The simulations show that the fact that normally the instrument will continuously scan the sky helps considerably in achieving the desired performance. The sensitivity achievable and the techniques of data processing which are foreseen will be described and the results of simulations will be presented.
