The instrumentation and capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), which is presently undergoing assembly for a 1986 launch, are outlined. The instrumentation includes a Faint Object Camera, High Speed Photometer, Wide Field and Planetary Camera, a High Resolution Spectrograph and a Faint-Object Spectrograph. An interferometric fine guidance sensor will direct the 25,500 lb spacecraft with a 0.01 arcsec pointing accuracy. The final assembly is being accompanied by cutting a small hole in the wall of the casing to allow filtered sunlight to bathe the CCD imaging sensors to increase their UV sensitivity. The HST will be subjected to simulated launch and space environments when assembly is complete. The preparation, particularly check-out of the fine guidance system, will be completed before the payload is released for loading into the Orbiter bay.
