A simple mapping model is obtained for the motion of an asteroid near a resonance with Jupiter, assuming a circular orbit for Jupiter. This mapping has all the main features of the actual system, i.e. the correct values for the fixed points (periodic orbits) and the correct stability indices. The method is applied for the 3:1 resonance, but can be used for the study of motion near any other resonance and also far from resonance.
