Visual observations of the RV Tau star R Scuti covering 150 yr were studied with various techniques of modern time-series analysis. The Fourier spectrum of the observations consists of hundreds of peaks above the noise level. It indicates continuous behaviour in the power spectrum with characteristic time about P=70 and 140 d. Hydrodynamical calculations suggest that the irregular light variation of giant variables may result from low-dimensional (deterministic) chaos. Topology of the reconstructed phase space together with dimensional calculations support this hypothesis. A striking similarity was found between the reconstructed attractor of one of the simplest chaos producing differential equations, i.e. the Rössler model, and that of the light variation of R Scuti. Because of the observational noise, the exact fractal dimension of the trajectories derived from the light curve cannot be calculated, but the attractor is embeddable in a low-dimensional (˜4-5) phase space. We suggest that the light variation is a result of a chaotic oscillation determined by a low-dimensional dynamical system.
