Radio and optical observations of the high-luminosity radio galaxy 0831 + 557 are presented. MERLIN and VLBI maps, ranging in resolution from 1.7 arcsec to 15 milliarcsec, reveal low-brightness, steep-spectrum emission of overall extent 11 arcsec, and a compact core, with two components separated by 160 milliarcsec each exhibiting a spectral peak. These components combine with the extended emission to give an overall radio spectrum which is that between 178 MHz and 2.7 GHz. The optical appearance and spectrum of 0831 + 557, however, show little trace of a non-thermal continuum nor the broad emission lines normally associated with such flat-spectrum radio sources. Some properties of the source can be accounted for within the framework of relativistic beaming models but others point to it being an intrinsically unusuall object. It may be a member of the clas of compact VLBI doubles.
