Scientific paper

The Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO), which completed its first full year of observations in 1989, is described. Consisting of the Leighton 10.4 m diameter telescope located on Mauna Kea (Hawaii) at an alititude of 4,100 m, the telescope is designed to achieve diffraction limited operation at 3220 micrometers. Continued adjustments to the surface are expected to increase surface accuracy from 27 to 17 microns (rms).
