Observational results of molecular clouds not closely associated with massive star formation are studied. Observations which point towards a morphology and a type of dynamical evolution much more complex than previously thought are given particular attention. The apparent self similarity of the medium, its fractal distribution, the lack of any characteristic scale above 0.02 pct. the connectedness of the cold dense gas and the close interconnection between the different phase within molecular clouds are discussed. The various interpretations given to the existence of broad wings in the millimeter line profiles in regions not associated with stellar outflows are summarized.
