It is argued that the prediction by Obashev et al. (1982) of funnel-shaped depressions associated with sunspots (Wilson's effect) is unrealistic when examined using MHD stability criteria. A simpler geometrical sunspot model with an asymmetric variation of Wilson's effect is proposed. It is shown that the revised model is more consistent with the theoretical constraints than the original model. The geometry of the funnel depressions is shown in a drawing.
