The choice of a suitable equipotential surface for calculating the height of a non-terrestrial planet is considered. It is shown that the definition of Listing (1873) for the geoid does not apply to planets or satellites which do not have oceans. The zero-heights reference surface W(0) is found to be the best-fitting surface reference. Conditions are established for solving the problem of planetary height when satellite measurements are not available.
