The prospects for the spectral classification of faint red stars using space-based observations are assessed. Using data from colorimetric observations in the ultraviolet together with optical range observations, it is shown that it is still not possible to make an unambiguous spectral classification of faint stars subject to strong interstellar absorption. It is then demonstrated that the use of the spectrogram-length method makes it possible to determine reliably the spectral class of a star, the interstellar absorption to the star, and the star's luminosity class.
