The analysis of image data collected during the Venera 15/16 mission is reviewed, and predictions are made of how many impact craters the Magellan space probe is likely to detect on Venus and how they would look. In this connection the influence of the imagery geometry and resolution on the identification of craters is considered. The diameter-frequency distribution and the atmosphere shielding effect on the frequency-diameter curve are discussed at length. It is noted that one of the results of the Magellan mission would be an increase in the number of impact craters revealed on the Venusian surface, which promises to allow progress on such problems as the history of the Venusian atmosphere and the crater retention age. Some possible approaches in this field on the basis of Venera 15/16 data and some relatively simple models are illustrated. It is suggested that Magellan imagery will show the total number of impact craters on Venus to be in the range of 300-600.
