A pre-Magellan review is presented of aeolian processes on Venus. The Venus observations relevant to the surface process are considered and the laboratory simulations and theoretical considerations of the effects of windblown particles on Venus are outlined. Plausible models for the roles that aeolian processes may have played on the planet are discussed. Based on the rate of disappearance of radar-bright haloes around impact craters, the rate of removal of block surfaces is estimated to be about 0.01 km/Ga. Observations to be made via Magellan and future spacecraft are proposed to resolve unanswered questions regarding aeolian processes on Venus. The overall conclusion is that Venus is a geologically active planet, but one dominated by volcanism and tectonism. Different conditions, however, are suggested by theoretical considerations and experimental data on weathering and transport of surface materials.
