Detections of the (J,K) = (2,1) non-metastable inversion line of ammonia in eight sources near compact H II regions or OH and H2O masers are reported. The authors report a first detection of the (5,3) line and a second detection of the (4,2) line, both found in W51e. If the non-metastable levels are collisionally excited, the H2 densities should be greater than 105cm-3, and hence non-metastable ammonia lines are expected to be indicators for high density regions. The measurements of various metastable NH3 lines and model calculations allow estimates of the rotational, Tr, and kinetic temperatures, Tk, in these regions. The authors have estimated source sizes, virial masses, and average H2 densities. These densities are compared with those obtained from statistical equilibrium calculations. The H2 densities and source sizes are used to obtain column densities of H2 and the abundance ratios of NH3 relative to H2. Comparisons with values of Tk and n(H2) from studies of other molecules are made.
