An attempt is made to describe the X-ray emitting plasma in the intra cluster medium (ICM) in terms of a hydrostatic model, assuming non-isothermal conditions. Attention is given to a thermal gradient in the ICM by considering observed thermal and energy characteristics, e.g., local velocity dispersions, X-ray spectra, etc., and relations between them. The slope of the surface-brightness profile (SB) is found to depend on the energy range, which agrees with previous observations of different SBs for ICM plasmas with different energies. Furthermore, the energy range is determined to be an indicator of the sign of the thermal gradient. Ironically, the hydrostatic model then predicts isothermal ICM conditions for the Coma cluster and for Perseus.
