Since the development of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) begun, the routine observations from the ground-based ionosonde network provided the bases for the analytical description of the electron density profile. Ionosondes are a cost-effective way of monitoring an important part of the earth's environment. They produce a wealth of information for altitudes below the level of maximum density that no other technique can supply. The long established ionospheric stations, over three or four solar cycles in some cases, are a particularly valuable network for progress in global mapping applying more sophisticated numerical analysis procedures. These studies would be greatly facilitated with the recent increase of digital ionosonde technique.
