Approaches in use at Mauna Kea Observatory for dealing with major problems associated with the taking of astronomical photographs in color are presented. The first approach relates to the hypersensitization of color film, necessary to avoid underexposures or prohibitively long exposure times, and involves the baking of emulsions in either pure nitrogen gas or nitrogen with a small admixture of hydrogen. The second procedure concerns the problem of photographing objects with emission-line, rather than continuous, spectra with a color film containing dead zones that may overlap with an important emission line. It is shown that comparison of the photographic color with spectral measures allows the validation of the photographic colors. Color photographs of astronomical objects taken using the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope at Mauna Kea are also presented.
