We rediscuss the use of Pickering-Racine prisms for extension of photometric calibration sequences to faint magnitudes. The design philosophy and practical implementation techniques are reviewed We emphasize the specific procedures to be followed during the preparation and execution of an observing program, as well as in the data reduction. Finally, a test of the use of such a device, based on data for the cluster NGC 2419, is reviewed. We find no correlation between Δm and magnitude, when photographic magnitudes are compared to those determined from a linear, electronic detector.
