A sample of QSOs having continuum absorption breaks near 912 A in the emission-line rest frame is investigated. Eight of the QSOs are sufficiently well observed to allow determinations of the location of the absorbing material, with seven of these having absorbing material somewhere outside the emission-line region. The other case is found to be consistent with absorption by material external to QSO. By including data from other samples, it is determined that the covering factor epsilon for large clouds of emitting material is less than 0.09 and that the data are entirely consistent with epsilon less than 0.02. It is suggested that the small observed values of the Ly-alpha/H-beta intensity ratio for QSO emission lines are unlikely to arise from selective Ly-alpha depletion. In addition, three of the five QSOs observed at Cerro Tololo showed broad absorption features in their spectra. A huge trough of N V absorption was observed in one object, which might be spread over a range of ejection velocity as large as 54,000 km/s.
