Orbital mean temperature, T(m), is calculated as a function of eccentricity e over the zero-0.97 e value range, 1-100 AU semimajor axis, and zero albedo. If water ice is the major cometary constitutent, the present results indicate that the comets d'Arrest, Encke, Oterma, Schwassmann-Wachmann 2, and Tempel 2, contain crystalline ice and must in the past have experienced a short period of high activity due to the phase transition from amorphous to cubic ice. Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 and Halley may contain amorphous ice in the inner part of the nucleus, with the former conserving its erratic activity for a protracted period, until all its ice is in the cubic state. Since in Halley's case no crystalline crust can be built up, it will have an important activity at small heliocentric distances until final depletion. These results are generalized to other periodic orbits.
