An analytical treatment for the structure of the 'working surface' of the jet associated with a young stellar object is given based on gas dynamics. Mathematical solutions of the flow field and the temperature distribution are obtained. Both nonradiating and radiating shocks are discussed. For the case of radiating shocks the relation between the geometrical parameters of the working surface and the radiation loss factor is given.
