We present time-resolved (1s) white-light photometry of the intermediate polar EX Hya during the rise to one of its rare outbursts. Our observations started on May 5, 1987 with the system being already at twice the quiescent intensity. The brightness further increased by a factor of 10 within 3 hours. The onset of the outburst can be confined by our observations on May 4, 1987 when the system was still at its normal quiescent flux.
The outburst light curve is dominated by a rapid flaring. The 67-min intensity modulation which is characteristic of the system in quiescence and which is associated with the rotational period of the white dwarf seems to persist until the end of our observations at light maximum although flaring renders its detection difficult.
The narrow optical eclipse of the inner accretion region by the secondary is visible only at the beginning of the outburst but disappears during the brightness increase. At outburst maximum, however, a broad eclipse of an enhanced outer accretion disk seems to develop.
We have searched for quasi-periodic oscillations in the period range 2-250 s, but EX Hya exhibited no such oscillations contrary to some other dwarf novae in outburst.
