Magnetic field configurations predicted from kinematic mean-field dynamo models are considered. To compare between observations and theory, synthetical polarization maps were computed by integrating the transfer equations for the three Stokes parameters, I, Q, and U. The models show the effects to be expected. The models suggest that, for moderate disc thicknesses, modifications of the observed polarized emission due to fields above the plane are minor. For more extended electron distributions, quite complicated polarization patterns were obtained. It is shown that the criterion based on rotation measures is mostly quite reliable.
