Observations of the e+-e- annihilation radiation from the galactic center suggest that something truly extraordinary is occurring there. The authors review the observations of this intense, time-varying, 0.511 MeV emission and discuss the implications of these and other recent observations on the positron production process, the annihilation region and the fundamental nature of the galactic center source.
