The X-ray and gamma-ray emission spectra of the young pulsars PSR 0531 + 21 (Crab) and PSR 0833 - 45 (Vela) are characterized, with a focus on observations obtained with the COS-B satellite during 1975-1982. The dominance of the gamma-ray emission over the radio emission (by a factor of 10 to the 6th) is stressed; the capabilities of current and planned airborne, balloon-borne, and satellite gamma-ray instruments are reviewed; the data are presented graphically; and the negative results of searches for high-energy emission from other radio pulsars are attributed to a decline in high-energy emission with pulsar age. Findings reported include a harder gamma-ray spectrum for the Vela pulsar at the second emission-light-curve peak than at the first, a secular variation of the relative strength of the two gamma peaks for the Crab pulsar, and no such variation in the simultaneouslu obtained X-ray spectra.
