Polarization measurements were made of extragalactic radio sources in the neighborhood of the Perseus spiral arm to characterize the magnetic field structure of the arm. Attention was also given to the Faraday rotation measure (RM) previously observed by various researchers. Several models of the magnetic field configuration expected in a spiral arm are considered and compared with the detected data. The comparisons supported a model for a large scale magnetic structure with an azimuthal direction and clockwise orientation, with a total field strength of 1.5 microgauss. The results refute the counterclockwise orientation predicted by gravitational collapse theory, while sufficiently small field strengths must be used in dynamo-density wave theory.
