The possibility that carbon monoxide condenses onto dust grains in dark molecular clouds is examined. An attempt is made to evaluate the temperature of dark cloud grains, and the CO saturated vapor pressure is calculated as a function of temperature on different grain surfaces, deducing the expected depletion in dark clouds. The situation of observational searches for CO depletion is reviewed, and it is concluded that the present data imply the existence of an efficient desorption mechanism. It should operate for several molecules observed in dark clouds including CO and N2, and it should increase the latter by at least an order of magnitude.
