In certain circumstances heat can flow across magnetic fields up the temperature gradient a phenomenon due to second-order transport i.e. transport that depends on the product of the temperature gradient and the velocity gradient. This mechanism has been previously applied successfully to tokamaks and to the heating of plasma loops. In this paper a model is constructed showing how it is possible to heat the corona using a plasma loop as a conduit. The loop is hotter than the ambient plasma in the upper chromosphere and transition layer and cooler than the ambient plasma in the corona. Hence with a temperature decreasing with height in the plasma loop heat enters the loop at the bottom is conducted normally up the loop and then dispersed laterally into the corona. Typical figures show that this type of heating is sufficient to heat both the quiet and active coronas and it also has the non-homogeneous temperature distribution observed in the lower corona.
