Mercury bears information which might be the key to understanding the origin and early evolution of our solar system. The necessary details of its properties can only be provided by a space mission. Nevertheless only one spacecraft ever visited Mercury more than 25 years ago when Mariner 10 performed three fly-bys in 1974-1975. A precise characterization is therefore still imminent. BepiColombo is an Interdisciplinary Cornerstone Mission to the planet Mercury that shall provide the detailed information necessary to understand Mercury and its magnetospheric environment. The mission was going through a re-assessment to fit BepiColombo into a changed funding scenario without compromising on the scientific outcome. Various mission profiles new payload concepts and technologies were investigated to optimize resources and advance the scientific return. The spacecraft is envisaged to consist of three modules the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO) the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Surface Element (MSE). The MMO studies the wave and particle environment of the planet from an eccentric orbit. The MPO and MSE are dedicated to the characterization of Mercury itself. Additional scientific objectives include fundamental physics and asteroid detection. The outcome of the re-assessment process and the newly defined BepiColombo mission will be presented.
