Superhumps, discovered in the early seventies by Vogt and Warner, have become the defining characteristic of the superoutbursts of the SU UMa dwarf novae. All the early models have given way to the currently accepted explanation in terms of periodic enhancements of tidal dissipation in the outbursting accretion disc. In the last several years, however, the phenomenology has become much richer, with superhumps seen in other kinds of CVs and semi-detached compact binaries not only in outburst, and with the discovery of so-called `negative' superhumps. This paper summarizes these developments, emphasizing those aspects where theoretical understanding is lacking.
