In this paper, we present a direct way to compute the expressions for the celestial coordinates, X, Y, of the celestial intermediate pole (CIP) from the integration of the rigorous differential equations describing its motion in space. The computation follows the approach described in Capitaine et al. (2006, A&A 445, 347), which is based on a semi-analytical integration at the level of accuracy required by the IAU 2000 Resolutions, using the method of variation of parameters. Preliminary results of this study are reported for the case of an axially symmetric rigid Earth, and the theories ELP2000 for the Moon and VSOP87 for the Sun and planets. The solution is compared with respect to other existing solutions including the current expressions for the X, Y coordinates obtained in an indirect way from the expressions of the classical nutation angles.
