The availability of wide field surveys has opened the era of large scale analysis for understanding structure and evolution of the Galaxy. We describe the population synthesis approach used at Besançon Observatory which has lead to a consistent description of the stellar population of the Galaxy, on the points of view of their distribution, formation and evolution. The model is constrained both by theoretical aspects and by large scale data sets, from photometry, as well as from kinematics. We shall show recent progress on determining large scale structure of dust in the galactic plane, the bulge structure and its link with microlensing experiments. Future developments and applications will also be described, related to optical and near-infrared survey analysis and stellar classification.
