An optical linear polarization map of the spiral galaxy M51 is presented. The data may be interpreted to show that the magnetic field in the plane of the galaxy is in the form of an open spiral. This configuration persists from within 200 pc of the galactic nucleus out to 5 kpc. The implications of these results for current ideas of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies is discussed.
