Data on the morphology of the ionospheric trough (IT) at high altitudes (1000-6000 km) in the Southern Hemisphere were obtained from Prognoz-5 observations of VLF atmospheric noise during January-June 1977. The greatest width of the IT was observed near the meridian at the south geomagnetic pole. The equatorial boundary of the trough in the region of the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly was shifted toward lower latitudes. Data on the boundary of the plasmasphere (determined from a sharp decrease in electron density) during prenoon and late evening hours of geomagnetic local time are also examined.
