The authors consider the magnetic field generated by the current needed to balance the centrifugal force on the Io torus plasma to find a self-consistent equation for radial mass transport. Solutions give plasma density and field strength as a function of distance for different mass transport rates. The authors subject these solutions to stability analyses to find where the field lines break forming a plasma bubble. The breaking point approaches Io as the plasma transport rate increases. At ≡3×1030atoms s-1 it reaches Io. This sets an upper limit on the magnetosphere's ability to off-load mass from Io.
