Twenty cases of 'disparitions brusque' or sudden disappearances, of filaments on the sun are analyzed. The liftoff of a filament is probably instigated by a reorganization of the contiguous photospheric magnetic field as a new flux of opposite polarity thrusts into that field. The filament rise velocity is inversely proportional to the square of its distance from the nearest center of activity. The filament becomes activated prior to a flare, and it lifts off at the moment the flare is ignited. Its rise begins at the end closer to the flare, and the filament rise velocity reaches a maximum simultaneously with maximum light of the flare.
