An optical photometric study of Nova Cygni 1978 based on uvby observations, which provide good coverage of the first 100 days of activity, is presented. This nova has some interesting characteristics that include a light curve which is apparently inconsistent with a distance determined from the rate of decline from visual maximum, little optical evidence of the dust formation phase, and an early decline and transition light curve which is very well fit by two power laws in time. Advantages of obtaining nova photometry with the uvby system are reviewed, and we suggest that this system is much better for studies of novae than the more commonly used UBV system.
