The authors present multifrequency observations spanning a frequency range of 0.4 - 14.5 GHz of 51 low frequency variable sources. The statistical comparison of the amplitude and time scale variability at different frequencies suggests diverse spectral behaviour which may reflect different physical phenomena. The authors have identified three distinct classes of variability. The first class includes sources showing variability only at meter wavelengths; the optical counterparts of these objects are QSOs, galaxies, empty fields. The second class contains sources which have both high and low frequency variabilities which appear unrelated and have a minimum of activity around 2.3 GHz. The third class accounts for objects which show correlated variability from high to low frequency. The two last classes are associated with QSOs and BL Lac objects. These different characteristics are believed to be manifestations of two distinct phenomena. The correlated variability could be explained with the classical expanding cloud model, possibly with relativistic bulk motions. Another mechanism, probably independent, must exist to account for the variability of the other classes of sources.
