The unsaturated Compton model for Cygnus X-1 is attractive as it accounts for the power law spectrum with index (alpha) approximately equal to 1, and for the alleged high electron temperature (greater than 1 billion K). A critical test for the model is proposed, utilizing spectral data and especially the transition data when Cyg X-1 exhibited anticorrelated variations in soft and hard X-ray luminosities, with the pivoting point at about 10 keV; it is shown that the hard X-ray data available to date strongly support this model.
