The authors present a multivariate analysis of a sample of 53 irregular and blue compact galaxies, with a particular emphasis on chemical abundances. The sample is built from a compilation of observational data taken from the literature. A principal component analysis shows that the main parameter governing the evolution of these galaxies is their total luminosity. The authors also confirm the very tight correlation between the Ne and O abundances, implying that these elements are formed in exactly the same stars. Finally, a weak trend is found for the galaxies richest in He (at a given O/H), to be also richest in N. This effect is expected from stellar evolution theories.
