A study of the spatial and temporal distribution of sporadic E-region ionization in high latitudes, using the data of 25 high-latitudinal stations of the world network of ground-based ionospheric sounding in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as hourly values of winter Es-parameters for the epochs of maximum and minimum solar activity, is discussed. Results indicate that the main source of the auroral-E is the fluxes of low-energy protons of the ring current, and for the Es-ionization in the auroral oval, the source is the fluxes of low-energy auroral electrons. In addition, there is a relationship between the occurrence of Es-ionization inside the polar caps and the direction of the IMF, which indicates that the electrical fields in the polar ionosphere contribute to the Es-formation in the area.
