Following up the discussion by Wilson and Leung (1977), new determinations of radial velocities, rotation, luminosity ratio, standard uvby indices, and time of minimum are presented for the early-type contact binary V701 Sco, a member of the young open cluster NGC 6383. The components are found to be nearly indistinguishable, nearly unevolved Bl stars of mass ∼9 Msun, radius ∼4 Rsun, and Te ∼23,500° K, all appreciably larger than previously assumed. Velocity, reddening and distance agree with those of NGC 6383.
Because the mass ratio is very close to unity, the observed period increase, 5.7 10-10, implies a large rate of mass transfer, Mṡ = 7.7 l0-7 (q - 1)-1 Msun/yr. This is one of the very largest mass exchange rates known. The flow is from the less to the more massive star, and the mass-gaining star is probably component 2. A plausible evolutionary picture is one of case A Roche lobe overflow, presently in the rapid phase. We suggest that the pre-overflow configuration was one of near-contact, with components of quite similar mass.
