An annual variation with its extrema at the equinoxes has been detected in photospheric measurements of the magnitude of the large-scale solar magnetic field near the equator. It is proposed that a hemispheric asymmetry in the magnitudes of the large-scale magnetic fields in the region of generation of the quadrupole field is responsible for this variation.
