A general definition of the tidal force is given which takes into account both the static and dynamic aspects of the phenomenon and which is applicable to the case of N bodies. Expressions are derived for the general tidal force acting on the moon from the earth and the sun and for the tidal force acting on the earth from the moon and the sun. The former expression can be used in explaining the mechanisms of moonquakes and the motion of the line of nodes of the moon.
