The fourth X-ray astronomy mission of Japan, Astro-D, scheduled to be launched in February 1993, is described, and its scientific goals are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the design and characteristics of the Astro-D high-throughput wide-band telescope and the focal plane detectors for its four sets of multimirrors. The spatial resolution of the Astro-D mirrors is 2-3 arcmin in half power diameter.
