The nature of the continuum X-ray emission in low-mass X-ray binaries has been controversial for many years, with workers polarised between the Eastern model with small central Comptonizing region and alternative models. We present measurements of accretion disc corona (ADC) radial extent by dip ingress timing which show unambiguously that the ADC is very extended, typically rADC ~50,000 km, ruling out the Eastern model. We secondly present measurements of ADC temperature which indicate that the ADC extends outwards to the position at which hydrostatic equilibrium fails. We also show that the ADC temperature decreases with increasing source luminosity, the high values in fainter sources of 25 keV or more requiring a presently unknown heating mechanism. These results suggest that ADC formation which is poorly understood takes place via illumination of the disc by the central source. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the extended ADC to the correct form for Comptonization models to be used in spectral fitting.
