In order to test the possibility that Gamma Cas might be the optical counterpart of the transient X-ray source MX 0053+60, a model is evaluated in which the X-ray emission arises due to bremsstrahlung in an optically thin coronal-like region surrounding the star. Evidence for such regions associated with early-type stars is reviewed, and the proposed emission mechanism is analyzed. The results show that if Gamma Cas is MX 0053+60 and the X-ray emission does not arise from accretion onto a compact object, then bremsstrahlung in a coronal-like volume around the star requires a temperature of at least 20 million K, an electron density not exceeding 100 billion per cu cm, and a larger outer than inner emission-volume radius. Several difficulties associated with this model are briefly discussed.
